An investigation is underway after an Ikea contractor was killed in an overnight “workplace incident” .

Staff at the Reading store have confirmed a contractor carrying out work through the evening lost his life.

Emergency services were called to the store, which opened in the summer, at around 3am this morning – Wednesday, October 19.

It is understood police, ambulance and fire crews attended the scene.

The details of the incident are not yet known but a spokesman from the South Central Ambulance Service confirmed it was a “workplace incident”.

The shop has been closed this morning while an investigation takes place, reports Get Reading.

Javier Quinones, deputy retail manager for IKEA UK and Ireland said: “We are very saddened to confirm that this morning, 19th October, a contractor died in an incident on our site in Reading.

“The safety and security of everyone on our premises is always our highest priority and we are now supporting the Thames Valley Police with their investigation.

“The store will remain closed this morning.

“Our thoughts are with the individual’s family at this time.”
